“Tell that to Charlie Gunwin,” I spat back, and immediately regretted it from the way he looked down at me cross. “I apologize, sir, but he had to be removed because of the hostility of these supes. The massive scar on his back proves that while this facility is geared to protect regs, it is far from flawless. And because we aren’t disciplining these beasts like we’d promised, more and more incidents like Gunwin can and will occur. I understand that we are short staffed hero wise, but let’s not go down like this.”

“Go down?”

“Yes!” I jumped out of my seat animated. “If you’re worried about SOS bringing this entire operation to rest, you should be looking at the threat that sits right at home. Our supes aren’t stupid. They know we are bluffing. They are aware that there is only so much bite we have behind our bark. And after what Rachel Henderson did to our four heroes, we cannot find replacements. We are at a crippling deficit that will only spiral the longer we ignore the fact that—” I choked, gasping for air. I felt my heel lift from the floor, watching as my boss stretched his hand in front of him. I grabbed my throat, struggling to breathe the longer he had his hold on me. His fingers curled in gradually, making all of the blood rush to my skull.

“The last time I checked, I was the head of this operation. The grand poobah…” He grinned wickedly. “Dearest Pam, I do not worry. I have you in the front lines, don’t I? Why should I ever fret? You’d promised me success. Ever since I’d brought you under my wing. I taught you everything I know, and turned you into something more useful than an employee. You are competent, headstrong, fierce, and domineering—a leader. You will not let these super heroes overpower you, and you WILL NOT LET MY COMPANY CRUMBLE BY ANY MEANS! Do we have an understanding?”

I’d crossed the line… I knew it from the time I allowed my emotions to go astray. I nodded, and he immediately released me.

“That’s my girl.” He straightened his lapel as he watched me scoop myself off the floor. The doctor cleared his throat, and with a soft breath, he pivoted his head to me again. “Now that we understand each other, I need you to fix this little mess you’ve made. Cassandra and Sasha Sunter. You over-reached there quite a bit. You didn’t expect them to remember Rynn’s pretty little face, and they fell short.”

“History has proven thus far that they don’t remember much after the Awakening…”

“Well, this is why we should have run tests. From the post mission report, I gauged that Rynn still thinks that they are her sisters.”
